A WORD FROM MAESTRO LOUIS LAVIGUEUR, C.Q.

That a the Orchestre Symphonique des Jeunes de Montréal is heading into its fiftieth season is, at first glance, an apparent contradiction. But, on closer inspection, it is the sign of an undeniable vitality and enthusiasm.

The Civic Orchestra, which has become the Orchestre Symphonique des Jeunes de Montréal, has been able to bring together, since 1976, thousands of young musicians who have agreed to devote their Saturday mornings to discovering and perfecting together (the word is essential) the masterpieces of symphonic music and to present them with the energy of their age to an audience always amazed at the level of playing and style.

Many have found valuable training there that has led them to play in the best orchestras in the world. All of them have been imbued with a cultural richness and a sense of solidarity that enrich our society now and again tomorrow.

I am one of the founding members of the Montreal Youth Civic Orchestra, which later became the OSJM. It is really there that I discovered the joy of playing symphonic repertoire. I continue to fuel this passion by virtue of being a member of the Sinfonia Orchestra since 2006, where I also have the pleasure of being the president.

I now work as a senior technical specialist with CAE in Montreal.

Francis LortieViola, 1976-1982

The OSJM allowed me to keep the flame of playing violin alive at a time when my interest in solo performance was wilting. For me, the OSJM was the continuation of my musical development, a common drive, a chance to experience magical moments, and an opportunity to create lasting friendships.

As the co-founder of l’EnsembleTryade (made up of three OSJM alumni), music is still my favourite hobby.
Having completed studies in architecture and management, I am now pursuing a career managing construction megaprojects.

Julienne Glorieuxviolin, 2002-2012

My time with the OSJM was probably the experience which had the biggest impact on the course of my life. All of my experiences with the OSJM, from the ambitious concerts to the tours in Quebec and Germany, not to mention the inspiring presentations delivered by Louis… all of these are etched in my memory. I am now a conductor in residence with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and conductor for the Toronto Youth Symphony Orchestra (TSYO). My aim is to give the young musicians in the TSYO the same profound musical and human experiences that were offered to me by the OSJM.

Simon Rivardviolin à l’OSJM, 2003-2007

My time with the OSJM was a key part of my musical education. I learned about the discipline and etiquette of ensemble playing, notably the importance of communication and within each section and between sections.

I have since made my home in Switzerland and perform across Europe and North America as a specialist in historical trombones.
